Abstract |
In sexual assaults, the biological and physical evidences that are interchanged between victim and assailant assume a leading role in the investigative and prossecutive aspects of the case, Rape differs from other violent assaultive crimes in that the perpetrator often leaves personal biological evidence at the scene. This evidence, in the form of semen or sperm, can provide proof of sexual contact as well as enable the development of a partial genetic profile of the rapist. The impact of the basic scientific advances including DNA fingerprinting on the examination of sexual assault evidence has been to increase both the frequency of semen or sperm identificaions and the inclusionary or exclusionar y value of the evidence such as hairs and seminal stains. The intent of this papaer is to describe the biological and biochemical basis that underlie the forensic approaches to semen identification and individualization. |
