Sudden Deaths associated with Induced Abortion
Sung Bong Hong
Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology, Korea University, College of Medicine
Abstract
Since the launch of the national family planning service in 1962, practice of induced abortion in Korea was estimated at about one million and half cases per annum in 1980. Hence, not few abortion-associated deaths have probably been encountered. However, inappropriate vital reporting system has yielded a scarcity of pertinent data. Reports from the United States disclosed during the period of 1972~1977 that major causes of death associated with legal abortions are infection, embolism, anesthesia, and hemorrhage. This paper is aimed to review the literatures on the deaths associated with induced abortion with an emphasis on sudden death cases.
